Bennerley Viaduct is a Grade II listed structure described by Historic England as a “stunning example of the genius of British Engineering”. It spans a quarter mile, and straddles the River Erewash on the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire border. It is one of only two wrought-iron viaducts left in England, alongside Meldon in Devon.
Campaigners saved the viaduct from demolition, reopening it as a cycle-way. A six-day, 320-mile cycle route was then devised to link Bennerley with Meldon via structures of engineering significance.
This radio series will document that ride, and share the history and memories of the places it passes through.
