Step Up
Support for Year 6 pupils transitioning to secondary school, provided by older kids who have been there and done it before.
60x 3mins, by Sound Communities CIC, first aired 26th June 2020
As children across the UK prepare to leave the comfort of their primary schools to head up in to the scary world of secondary schools, this year will be like no other for pupils making the transition. Without the usual preparation of induction days, and amid the risk of having to say goodbye to their primary schools remotely, many children will be finding the upcoming change extremely daunting.
Through Step Up, a team of 15 emerging young audio producers will create 60 playful, supportive and informative content vignettes to support young listeners facing the challenge of life beyond Year 6.
Older children will share their experiences, thoughts and concerns around transition with the current cohort. The content will be a virtual sounding board for conversations they would have historically had with their peers.
Sound Communities is one of the leading organisations for pioneering youth audio production in education settings in the country. Their leadership have over 40 years of production and teaching experience, and also run an online radio station called Ocean Youth based in Torbay.
